🌱 Root Chakra Healing: Techniques to Activate, Unblock, and Balance

What Is the Root Chakra?

The Root Chakra, known in Sanskrit as Muladhara, sits at the base of your spine. Think of it as your energetic foundation—the place where your sense of safety, stability, and belonging begins. Just as a tree needs strong roots to stand tall, you need a balanced root chakra to feel grounded, supported, and secure in your life.

This chakra, or energy center governs your connection to the Earth and supports your basic survival needs: food, shelter, safety, and your right to be here. It's deeply connected to your early childhood experiences and your relationship with your physical body.

A tender Story of how a Root Chakra becomes blocked

When Emily was six, a loud knock at the door changed everything.

Until then, she had felt safe in her little pink bedroom, with her stuffed animals lined up like loyal soldiers around her. But that knock brought police cars, flashing lights, and news no child should have to process. Her father wasn’t coming home. He had been in an accident.

After that night, something shifted inside her. She began waking in the night, heart pounding. She flinched at loud noises. She started biting her nails and clenching her jaw—tiny signs of a deep, inner disconnection.

As she grew older, Emily often felt like she didn’t belong—floating through life as if she was standing just outside the circle. She struggled to make decisions. She had digestive issues, chronic fatigue, and an invisible sense of anxiety that wouldn’t quite go away. She married a man who after two years left without good reason which worsened all of her feelings of not belonging.

It wasn’t until years later, during a Women's retreat in Sedona, that she heard the words root chakra for the first time. I described how early trauma, especially related to loss or instability, can block this energy center. Emily wept—not because she was sad, but because for the first time, something made sense. I was grateful there were other women there who wept with her because they had felt something similar in their own lives. Such compassion was beautiful to watch.

That was the beginning of her healing journey—one of reconnection, rooting, and finally, peace.

What the Science Says

While ancient science has left documentation of energy balancing practices, modern science hasn’t officially confirmed the chakra system, and research consistently supports its benefits in improving emotional and physical well-being. We know practices such as mindfulness, energy healing, breathwork, and body awareness stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, reduce stress hormones, and bring the body into a state of healing—exactly what a blocked root chakra needs.

🌿 Ways to Get Grounded and Balance Your Root Chakra

Whether you're healing from old trauma or simply feel a little scattered, these practices help anchor your energy and activate your root chakra.

  • Practice my Grounding Meditation daily find it here, it's free
  • Practice grounding yoga poses like Mountain Pose, Tree Pose, or Warrior I
  • Chant “LAM” (the seed sound for the root chakra) out loud or silently
  • Take a barefoot walk in nature—feel the Earth beneath your feet
  • Use root chakra affirmations like “I am safe,” “I am grounded,” and “I belong”
  • Carry grounding crystals like hematite, red jasper, or obsidian. I wear obsidian on a simple cord as a necklace when these feelings arise.
  • Take a salt bath to clear and calm your energy field. PRO TIP use 1 to 2 cups epsom salts in a hot bath. Use 2 Tbs of sea salt to exfoliate feet and rough areas. Use a circular scrubbing motion then, rest and let your stress flow out into the bath water.
  • Massage your feet and lower back to activate the root area
  • Try this breathing exercise—inhale belonging (security) drawing fresh energy up the spine, exhale fear sending it out and back down your grounding cord into the earth to be transmuted. Do this in a round of seven breaths.
  • Check in with your grounding cord throughout the day from your spine into the Earth, anchoring your energy

Root Chakra & Sacral Chakra: The Connection

Your Sacral Chakra, located just above the root, governs emotions, sensuality, and creativity. But if your root chakra is blocked, the energy can't rise. It's like trying to build a house without a foundation—your emotional and spiritual structures will feel wobbly.

Begin at the root. Always.

What the Root Chakra Can’t Do

We're working with the energetic frequency of your biofield. Healing your root chakra is powerful—and there is no woo woo involved. You are a whole being, and true balance includes:

  • Physical care (nutrition, sleep, movement)
  • Emotional processing and support
  • Spiritual practices that connect you to God, something greater

The root chakra supports all these aspects by helping you feel stable enough to do the deeper work.

Final Thoughts: Come Back to Earth, Beloved

As a child of this planet it is your right to feel safe. To take up space. To belong.

The root chakra doesn’t ask you to be fearless—it invites you to build safety within your own body so that fear no longer rules your life. Like Emily, you can begin again. You can re-root.

Start small. Breathe deep. Whisper, I am safe. I am grounded. I trust life.

Then feel your energy settle—like soil around a seed that’s finally ready to grow.
